Morocco, Third Buyer of French Arms

Marrakech – French arms sales grew 30 percent worldwide in 2013 to net 6.3 billion euros, according to a report by RFI. With 585 million euros worth of purchases, Morocco was the third largest purchaser of French arms, after Saudi Arabia with 1.9 million euros, Singapore 651 million euros. This is welcome news to the French arms industry, which lost a bid to sell the French Rafale fighter for Morocco to the US, who supplied Morocco with 24 Block 52 F16s C in 2012 for $2.4 billion. The French arms industry compensated for the loss of the Rafale sale when Morocco purchased the aFrench and Italian joint mission Fremm Frigate. Named the Mohammed VI, the frigate is 142 meters long and weighs about 6,000 tons, according to Defense Industry Daily. They put the cost at about $710 million. The Mohammed VI was built by DCNS in the West of France, starting in 2008 and delivered to Morocco in January 2014. It is manned by 108 crew and officers. The Fremm class frigate has multi-role capabilities, including anti-ship and anti-air missiles and anti submarine warfare with torpedoes.According to the DCNS website, the Fremm frigate can take on several different types of missions, from escort duties to naval gunfire support. As part of a joint task force, a Fremm can accommodate a fleet operations staff and, with an excellent C4ISR capability, can direct warfare in one or several spheres. The Royal Moroccan Navy has also purchased three 98-meter SIGMA class frigates, which were constructed at the Damen yard in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. The frigates are now in service with the Moroccan navy.Given Morocco’s 3,500 km coastline on the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean and increasing security challenges, the development of state-of-the-art naval forces is a priority. Morocco has maintained close links with France and the US for defense purchases.© Morocco World News. All Rights Reserved. This material may not be published, rewritten or redistributed read more

Government Deliberation: A New Round Begins

Rabat – Since it has become obvious that the Istiqlal Party (IP) will potentially be excluded from the coalition government, Secretary General of the National Rally of Independents Party (RNI), Aziz Akhannouch has been quoted by Moroccan journalist saying that “Benkirane presented a proposal for [the RNI] to discuss it with its partners.”Following his meeting with Morocco’s appointed Head of Government on Wednesday morning, Akhannouch said, “It was an important meeting with Benkirane. There is an offer, which I will discuss with our partners, including the Popular Movement (MP) and the Constitutional Union Party.”Regarding the nature of the offer, Akhannouch declined to reveal any details saying instead, “I will disclose it within two days.” The meeting was part of Benkirane’s ongoing mission to form a coalition government and find a solution to resolve what has become commonly known to Moroccans as the “Government Blockage.”The Secretariat General of the Justice and Development party issued a “vague communiqué” Tuesday without revealing anything new regarding formation pertaining to the new government. Scores of Moroccan journalists gathered in front of the headquarters of the PJD, waiting for Benkirane to formally announce whether or not the Istiqlal Party (IP) will participate in the government along with other parties.Last Saturday, at the conclusion of the December 31st council meeting, Benkirane said that he was “waiting for the release of the official statement from the IP before announcing his final decision on the participation of this party in the coalition government.”He also refuted the statement of Akhannouch, saying that he is “the only one who sets a deadline for the announcement of the parties that will participate in the new government, not Akhannouch,”This declaration followed Benkirane’s latest meeting with Akhannouch on December 29th, after which Akhannouch told journalists, “Laenser and I tried to persuade Benkirane to change his opinion about including the IP in the government. Akhannouch continued, “Benkirane now has a deadline to think about whether or not to exclude the IP.” read more

Ohio State womens hockey looking to make up points in standings at

OSU sophomore forward Lauren Spring (27) controls the puck during a game against Minnesota on Oct. 16 at the OSU Ice Rink. OSU lost 7-2.Credit: Courtesy of OSUThe Ohio State women’s ice hockey team continues its road stand over the weekend, as it is set to travel to the University of Minnesota Duluth to take on the Bulldogs on Friday and Saturday.Over the last few weeks the Buckeyes (8-17-1, 4-15-1) have focused on getting goals off rebounds. That led to 11 goals last weekend in two games at Minnesota State.“I think we just implemented what we had been practicing all week (by) taking pucks to the net,” assistant coach Carson Duggan said. “When we did that we either ended up scoring or drawing a penalty or we got a great scoring chance. So (it’s) a pretty simple concept, but sometimes you just have to reiterate.”Junior forward Claudia Kepler said that the offense ignited because of the players’ determination.“We talked as a team and we decided we needed to move the puck a little faster and pick our head up and be confident with the puck,” Kepler said. “I think when we did those little things goals started coming.”Duggan thinks the team needs to carry this improved mindset into the weekend series against the Bulldogs.“I hope some of the girls are a little bit confident going into this weekend and translate what they did,” Duggan said. “Just taking it to the net and not giving up a good shooting opportunity and getting those second and third chances.”The team also cites its focus on small details as a reason for its improved offensive play.“For the most part it was doing the little things and moving the puck well as a line and as a team in general,” Kepler said. “We need to continue to do those little things and win our battles.”The Buckeyes believe that their offense starts with stout defensive play in front of sophomore goaltender Alex LaMere.“If we can take care of our own end then the offensive zone will hopefully just come,” Duggan said. “So we can pick up where we left off against Mankato with getting pucks to the net and scoring some goals.”Knowing the opponentMinnesota Duluth (9-16-1, 6-13-1) currently sits five points ahead of the Buckeyes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings heading into this weekend’s series. The Buckeyes expect to have a pair of close contests, but they’re looking to take their momentum from last weekend’s sweep to Duluth.“It’s a lot of the same stuff,” Duggan said. “Duluth is a great team and we always play them really tight. They’re always really good games between the two programs.”Minnesota Duluth, OSU coach Jenny Potter’s alma mater, is currently in the midst of a six-game losing streak. Its last win came against the Buckeyes on Dec. 12. The two teams know each other well, and the Buckeyes are expecting two hard-fought contests.“Duluth is a tough team to play against, especially in the corners,” Kepler said. “They like to battle, so if we win our battles and we do the little things like we did this past weekend, I think we’ll have a good couple games up there.”The games are set to begin this weekend in Duluth, Minnesota, at 8:07 p.m. on Friday and 5:07 p.m. on Saturday.Beyond the Bulldogs After squaring off with Minnesota Duluth, OSU is slated to take on a team that is on a different path than the Bulldogs, in No. 2 Wisconsin. The Badgers boast a seven-game unbeaten streak and a 24-1-1 record overall. The two-game series is scheduled to be in Columbus with games on Feb. 5 and Feb. 6. read more

Microsoft spots University of Nebraska 250000 to move to Office 365

first_imgMicrosoft’s cloud productivity suite, Office 365, recently launched out of beta. The suite provides a lot of the same functionality Google Apps customers have been enjoying for quite some time, but with one obvious difference: it’s made by Microsoft, and that means delicious first-party compatibility with its desktop and server software like Exchange and Office. It’s a very attractive platform that offers plenty of cloud-powered advantages for administrators. Still, making the jump from an existing client-server setup can be an expensive process — and extra expense is frequently a major roadblock in the IT purchasing process. That may be a big reason Microsoft offers incentives to potential customers from time to time. It’s similar to the way your cellular carrier subsidizes your shiny, new smartphone: agree to come on board for an extended stay, and we’ll save you a bit of cash.AdChoices广告For the University of Nebraska, the $250,000 carrot Microsoft dangled was enough to seal the deal and move the majority of its users from Lotus Notes to Office 365.The bulk of that funding will actually be pumped back into the transition process, covering additional costs like consulting fees, license requirements, and a premier support agreement — which is always a nice safety net for administrators when switching services.Being able to dip into Microsoft’s Business Incentive Funds wasn’t the only factor that convinced the Huskers to make the move to Office 365. University officials cited operational cost savings, increased flexibility, and access to more up-to-date technology as motivating factors. Over the next year and a half, nearly all of UNL will be transitioned to Office 365. The one exception is the University’s Medical Center, as its officials remain unconvinced that the cloud’s security and privacy features are up to snuff.More at Infoworldlast_img read more

Portland police arrest suspected driver in hitrun crash that killed Vancouver man

first_imgPortland police on Thursday arrested a 53-year-old man who reportedly turned himself in as the driver in a Jan. 28 hit-and-run that killed a Vancouver pedestrian, Jason Lee Grant. The Traffic Division of the Portland Police Bureau took Jim Dean Patterson of Portland to the Multnomah County Detention Center on suspicion of two counts of failure to perform the duties of a driver, according to a bulletin issued about 5 p.m. Thursday. Patterson is being held on $500,000 bail.He may face additional charges after a grand jury is convened, according to updated information provided Friday by police.Police said Patterson appeared at the Eastport Plaza East Precinct Office about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday and turned himself in.Traffic Unit investigators also released more information about the crash Thursday, saying that Grant, 26, had been walking across Southeast Foster Road from north to south near 70th Avenue, about 7 p.m., and was not in a crosswalk, when he was hit by an eastbound vehicle whose driver fled the scene, leaving Grant to die. It’s unclear why Patterson allegedly failed to stop and help Grant, Portland police Lt. Robert King said Thursday night.Investigators also discovered in Patterson’s garage a green 2000 Toyota Tacoma pickup with front-end damage that matched the description police had released before Patterson’s arrest, the bulletin said. Police earlier had told news reporters the pickup’s radiator might have been damaged in the crash, adding that they found a large amount of radiator fluid at the crash scene. As officers took Patterson into custody on Thursday, other investigators were heading for Patterson’s home to check out a tip given to the Crime Stoppers program.last_img read more

Anthropologist challenges Lucys butchery tool use

first_img © 2010 PhysOrg.com (PhysOrg.com) — An anthropologist in Spain has challenged recent evidence the ancient hominin species Australopithecus afarensis, represented by “Lucy,” used sharp stones to butcher animals for meat some 800,000 years before the earliest known use of such tools. These two cutmarks were made about 3.4 million years ago. Credit: Dikika Research Project, California Academy of Sciences Manuel Dominguez-Rodrigo from Complutense University of Madrid and colleagues, say the marks found on two fossilized animal bones that were presented as evidence of butchery tool use were more probably caused by the animals being trampled by other animals. The fossilized bones, approximately 3.4 million years old, were found in the Dikika area of the Lower Awash Valley in Ethiopia, and had several incisions. The scientists who found the fossils concluded the marks were made by sharp stones like those found locally, which were used to slice the meat off the carcass. Their paper was published in Nature in August this year and reported in PhysOrg.This conclusion has been challenged by Dominguez-Rodrigo’s group, who say the marks resemble damage produced by experimental trampling, and the evidence that Australopithecus, a creature with similar-sized brains to modern chimpanzees, was using stone tools to butcher animals 3.4 million years ago is “currently unsupported.”The damage on the bones was compared to damage produced by a trampling experiment in 2009 in which three men of varying sizes trampled across deer bones placed in a sand bed of a similar sand mix to that existing in the fossil find location. The men wore shoes with soles covered by coarse grass and trampled the bones for two minutes. The trampling produced long, thin incisions with a flat-based V, or _/-shaped cross-section, which Dominguez-Rodrigo said were rarely found in animal butchery using stone tools. The trampling marks were also curved, like the marks on the Dikika fossils, whereas butchery marks might be expected to be straight. One of the scientists involved in the original research, Curtis Marean, an archaeologist from the Arizona State University, rejected Dominguez-Rodrigo’s assertions, saying the trampling experiment assumed Australopithecus was using stone tools rather than sharp stones found locally. He also said that while some of the marks resemble those on the experimentally trampled bones, there were two deep incisions known as A1 and A2 on one of the fossils, and they closely resemble butchery marks rather than trampling marks. Dominguez-Rodrigo agreed these marks were similar to cut marks made by stone tools, but rejected the conclusion because of the doubts raised by the trampling experiment. Leader of the original team, Paleolithic archaeologist Shannon McPherron from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology at Leipzig in Germany, added Dominguez-Rodrigo’s criticisms were based only on an examination of the photographs of the fossils and he had not examined the actual specimens.Dominguez-Rodrigo also said the fossils found in Dikika were discovered on the surface and could have been damaged by abrasive soil. If they had originated in a sand bed, as Marean’s group argued, animal trampling could have occurred and produced many of the cuts attributed to stone tools. The new paper is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Matt Nagy is the the real Bears MVP

first_imgMatt Nagy is the the real Bears MVPThe Bears got a convincing home win over the Vikings to put them at 7-3 on the season, and give them a stranglehold on the NFC North. Once again, Chicago’s Khalil Mack-led defense put on another dominant performance, but Colin thinks the real reason for the Bears’ turnaround is the offensive genius of Matt NAgy.While Sean McVay has gathered more headlines for his offensive brilliance with the Rams, Nagy’s is arguably more impressive because he has a limited quarterback and less impressive skill players. In an offensive league, everone needs to score points, and what Nagy has done with the Bears’ offense is the reason they’re headed for the playoffs. Guests:Sam Farmer – L.A. first_img Comments   Share   Top Stories After months of waiting, the NFL Draft finally arrived Thursday.Nineteen teams made their picks and the Arizona Cardinals were on the clock at No. 20. Of course, the Cardinals opted to trade down, swinging a deal with the New Orleans Saints to acquire the 27th overall pick and an additional third-round selection (91st overall).General manager Steve Keim says that was all part of the team’s plan.“Michael Bidwill and I spend a lot of time talking about strategy, we felt like we had our board set up perfectly,” Keim told Doug and Wolf Friday on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. “We looked at it from the standpoint, once we get to Player X, we feel like we could potentially trade back, acquire an additional pick, which was our goal all along, and still not compromise the player that we wanted.” Your browser does not support the audio element. – / 35 That player is Washington State safety Deone Bucannon, whom the Cardinals snatched up with the 27th pick.“We love his size, his athleticism, his physicality is something that drew us to him,” Keim said. “You see him in the alley and the way he hits, you see his ball skills — he had six interceptions last year and 15 in his career — so he knows how to get his hands on balls and track and adjust down the field. “Athletically, when you look at the kid, comparing him to the other safeties in this draft, this guy was second to none.”So how did a player of Bucannon’s ilk fall all the way near the bottom of the first round?
