Fire averted at Woodlands Hospital

first_imgQuick action by employees of Woodlands Hospital averted a major catastrophe at the facility on Wednesday. The Hospital’s staff reacted in a timely manner when an alarm was raised after a generator overheated and though the Fire Service was informed, the staff managed to gain control of the situation before their arrival, preventing what could have been a full-blown fire. When Guyana Times arrived at the scene, fire trucks were present and eyewitnesses revealed that the fire reportedly began at the rear of the building among the generators. One of the fire trucks at the Woodlands Hospital“The whole back start smoke and we hear people start holler fire. The hospital staff went in and they deal with it. The firefighters came and gone in, but we ain’t hear nothing back yet,” said one eyewitness who evacuated the Hospital’s premises upon the fire alarm being raised. However, when questioned, the Safety and Health Officer, Roger Hastwood relayed that the commotion was created simply because of a fire drill.“You are witnesses of our first, in a long time, fire drill,” was Hastwood’s response to the claims of a fire on the hospital’s premises.Members of the Fire Service would not confirm that the incident was indeed a fire drill, and refused to comment on the matter.last_img read more

Bandits rob, murder Chinese businessman

first_imgThe body of Chinese restaurateur Liyan Jiang, a 44-year-old father of three, was on Thursday evening found in the bathroom of his bottom flat Third Street, Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo home with hands bound and mouth gagged.Formerly of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, the late Liyan Jiang was found atDead: Liyan Jiangabout 22:00h by a friend after his wife requested that the friend check on her husband, since calls to his mobile phone had been going unanswered. The friend arrived at the house to meet the main access door ajar and the light in the building still on. He reportedly called several times for Jiang but received no response. He made the gruesome discovery as he looked around, and without hesitation contacted the Police. The home was ransacked, and there were about Jiang’s body marks of violence which suggested that he had been beaten mercilessly; but there was no sign of blood, even though there was a visible mark around Jiang’s neck that led investigators to believe he had died by strangulation.Reports are that the man had last been heard from at about 03:00h on Thursday, when he reportedly told friends with whom he was playing online games to “hold on”. It is believed that he had gone to check on sounds emanating from the bathroom and was attacked and killed.Guyana Times visited the house on Friday to find ranks of the CriminalThe house which Jiang occupied up to the time of his demiseInvestigation Department still conducting their investigations. The man’s wife was also in the building, trying to ascertain what the intruders had taken away. The friend who had made the gruesome discovery explained that the culprits must have jumped the perimeter fence to gain access to the premises, after which they went to the other side of the house and removed the louvre panes and then the grill.Based on evidence, the person who went through the window had to be small-boned.Investigators are working on the theory that after the intruder had gained access to the house, there might have been a scuffle between the suspects and the victim, since the surroundings were disturbed. The Police are of the opinion that the perpetrators departed the building through the main access door. The Police are in the process of acquiring CCTV footage from nearby buildings as they continue their investigations.Commander ‘D’ Division, Leslie James, when contacted, related that the Police are working to solve the murder, and in so doing are following several leads. He confirmed that no one has as yet been arrested for the heinous crime.Meanwhile, residents in the area believe a particular gang is terrorising and robbing people in the village. One man told Guyana Times that three men were recently seen scaling his fence to gain access to a Chinese supermarket. He noted that, upon realising what was happening, a relative raised an alarm and the men escaped. That resident, also a businessman, is calling on the relevant authorities to increase a security presence in the area.He nevertheless stated that the now dead Chinese businessman moved into the area only about two months ago. He cooked and served, hence there was no need for staff. He also noted that persons in the area did not hear any unusual sounds emanating from the businessman’s home.Guyana Times understands that the late Chinese businessman had moved into the village to set up the business, and his wife and three children were expected to join him at the end of the month. His wife operates another Chinese Restaurant at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.last_img read more

We MUST respect Palace! Man United star issues FA Cup final warning to teammates

first_imgAnder Herrera is warning Manchester United they cannot afford to take Crystal Palace lightly in Saturday’s FA Cup final. With a squad packed full of big names, and having finished 24 points ahead of their opponents in the Premier League, United are huge favourites to lift the trophy for the first time since 2004.But Herrera insists Alan Pardew’s side will not be walkovers at Wembley and says the Red Devils must be at their best to ensure they end their season with silverware.“We have to respect Crystal Palace,” said the Spanish midfielder, speaking to talkSPORT’s Dom McGuinness.“We cannot think already we have the trophy. They are a difficult team, they are very strong.“They are maybe one of the tallest teams in the Premier League and take advantage of set pieces.“We have to play very good if we want to beat them.”LIVE ON talkSPORT: Crystal Palace vs Manchester United – FA Cup final commentary from 16.00Victory over Palace would earn United a first trophy under Louis van Gaal – and their first since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.It has been a disappointing campaign for the club with Van Gaal coming in for severe criticism but Herrera says FA Cup success – which would see United equal Arsenal’s record of 12 wins – would represent a big achievement for the Dutchman and the players.“The FA Cup is the oldest competition in England, maybe the world. It is very important.“It is a chance for me to get my first trophy for Man United and I can’t wait to be at Wembley in front of our fans.“After a complicated season we have the chance to get a trophy – a very important trophy.“We should be fighting for every title and we haven’t been.“We haven’t fought for the Premier League title for nearly two or three months before finishing, we haven’t fought for the Champions League title because we went out in the group [stages], but the next most important trophy is the FA Cup and we have the chance to get a title for the club.“We can equal Arsenal. We are the best English team in terms of Premier League titles and we can now equal Arsenal in FA Cup titles so there is a lot to win on Saturday.”last_img read more

They are dependent on the safety net of the state and they are being failed.“If this was TDs or Senators who were being made to wait such a long time for payments you can be sure it would be sorted out very quickly,” he said. first_imgCouncillor Jack Murray and Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn at the LIsfannon Halting Site outside Buncrana.Local Sinn Féin public representatives, Deputy Pádraig Mac Lochlainn and Cllr Jack Murray are calling on Donegal County Council to close down the halting site at Lisfannon outside Buncrana. They were speaking after inspecting the site after a family who had been resident there over recent times, moved out. The derelict caravans left behind and damage done will cost Donegal County Council thousands of euro. They said this halting site for the Traveller community was only ever intended to be in place on a temporary basis.“It is a dangerous location alongside one of the busiest roads in Donegal. It also impacts on the important tourism and community amenity that is the North West Golf Links. “Unfortunately the family that have just left have done a huge diservice to the Travelling community. The condition that they have left the site in is utterly disgraceful and indefensible.“This site is a transient site and families are only supposed to locate there for a short while. Most families that have located there have acted responsibly but this recent family have let all of the rest down badly”.“We commend the members of Donegal County Council Traveller Consultative Committee including our colleague, Cllr Albert Doherty and Donegal Travellers Project for their mediation efforts with the family that have just left the site but their efforts must be matched by action from Donegal County Council management.“Now that this family have left and the site is cleared, we have been advised that Donegal County Council will close it down temporarily for essential repairs. We are calling on the management of Donegal County Council to honour the long standing promise they have made to find a safe and appropriate alternative location for a halting site within South Inishowen and to close down the Lisfannon halting site.” COUNCIL MUST CLOSE DOWN LISFANNON HALTING SITE – SINN FEIN was last modified: May 20th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgA LAWYER for a Co Donegal man allegedly caught speeding twice on the same day by GoSafe vans is attempting to delve deeper into how the speed camera system works. But the head of garda traffic in the county has described an application before Letterkenny District Court as a “pure fishing expedition; this is Donegal catch”.Inspector Michael Harrison was addressing Judge Paul Kelly as solicitor Kieran Dillon asked for a range of information on the operating systems of the GoSafe vans and including the instructions given to its operators and details on how each camera was “calibrated”. Hugh McFadden, 125 Thornberry, Letterkenny, is charged with exceeding the speed limit on January 24 last year at Magherennan, Letterkenny and later the same day at Ballyraine, Letterkenny.Mr Dillon said questions remained as to how the GoSafe system operates. He said he had written to gardai about this, but Inspector Harrison said the legislation didn’t allow for ‘fishing expeditions’ and gardai would only respond to genuine requests for discovery.Asked if he had received the letter from Mr Dillon, Inspector Harrison replied: “I have no intention of reading it.”He said any correspondence should be with GoSafe operators. The case was adjourned.GARDA INSPECTOR SAYS SOLICITOR IS ON ‘FISHING EXPEDITION’ IN GOSAFE VAN INQUIRY was last modified: September 9th, 2015 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:go safe vansLetterkenny Courtlast_img read more
