Pregnant woman brutally chopped by neighbour

first_imgA Hague backdam, West Coast Demerara woman is nursing two chop wounds to her head and a fractured skull after she was attacked by a neighbour on Saturday night when she confronted him about a bicycle, which he stole from her.Injured: Vanessa Persaud in her hospital bedInjured is Vanessa Persaud, who is 38 weeks pregnant and a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).Speaking with Guyana Times on Monday, Persaud said that on Saturday night at about 19:30h she saw the young man and confronted him about a bicycle, which he stole from her. She said that during the confrontation she informed the young man that she would be calling the police. According to the injured woman, the suspect’s younger brother threw a cutlass to him and he attacked her.“He started to run behind me and just start chopping me like he mad. I tried to escape but I couldn’t. I’m 38 weeks pregnant. I fall down, all the blood started gushing down [my] face. I got two big chops in my head and my skull fracture,” the distraught woman said.She added that she was immediately rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital then transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital but due to the severity of her injuries, she was transferred to the GPHC.Persaud further said that she has lost a lot of blood and is in severe pain but is praying for a full recovery.She added that she was experiencing severe abdominal pains and requested that the doctor check on her baby, however, the nurses told her that she was not admitted for any issues relating to her pregnancy and they can only deal with the chop wounds.“I am in here since Saturday night and I keep asking them all the time to check to make sure my baby is okay but they ain’t checking. The nurses just keep saying they ain’t admit me for that, they admit me for chop wound and that’s all they looking at and I could go to maternity with my clinic to deal with that after,” the woman said.Persaud said that her assailant was taken into custody and will be placed before the court of law on Thursday. She added that the suspect is 18 while his younger brother 14.She said the teens are known in the area as petty thieves and are very abusive to their mother.“They never went to school. They just smoking and stealing and creating trouble in the neighbourhood,” Persaud said.last_img
