Sports: CHAN 2018 Qualifiers: Liberia Face Mauritania Sunday

first_imgThe Lone Star of Liberia squad that defeated Sierra Leone in a friendly encounter at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium Following days of intense training, the national soccer team Lone Star will this Sunday take on Mauritania in the first leg of the 2018 African Nations Championship qualification matches at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.The Lone Star under the guidance of Coach James Salinsa Debbah have been undergoing preparations at the George Weah Technical Center.Coach Debbah and his boys will be hopping to restore the hope of Liberians that the team can do better in continental competitions and also make the difference in Group G of the 2019 African Nations Cup qualifiers.The dismal performance of the team against Zimbabwe was frustrating to Liberians, with many calling for the resignation of the head coach.Sunday’s encounter will be a huge task for Coach Debbah to work with a team comprising of 26 local players, some of whom are described as “inexperienced,” after the Zimbabwe match.The CHAN tournament involves only players who play in the domestic league of each country.Defenders Prince Kennedy and Hilton Varney, who were among the local players in the Zimbabwe match, have been left out of Coach Debbah’s 26 local players.Many supporters criticized the two defenders for not performing up to expectation during the match in Harare.The Lone Star needs nothing less than a win, which will put the team in a better position ahead of the return leg in Mauritania on July 23.Meanwhile, four match officials from neighboring Guinea have been assigned to handle Sunday’s match.Center referee is Baba Leno; Moustapha Toure as assistant referee number 1; Issa Soumah as assistant referee number 2; and  Aboubacar Mario Bangoura will serve as reserve referee.The winner between the two countries after the two legs is expected to face either The Gambia or Mali.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img
