first_imgAS PART of Guyana’s 51st Independence Anniversary celebrations, the Department of Education in collaboration with the Regional Administration, held a cycle and relay race on the main public road last Thursday, May, 25th.The cycle race wheeled off from Dartmouth while the relay race started from Lima. Both races concluded at the Anna Regina Car Park and were held for students from the various Secondary Schools. During an intensely contested cycle race involving ten pedal cyclists,Janeka Walcott from Johanna Cecilia Secondary School receives her prize from Principal Personnel Officer..Rameeza MullahVidesh Shane from Abram Zuil Secondary School eventually out-sprinted his rivals to emerge the winner of the Male category.Leroy Prince from Charity Secondary was second, while Adrian Singh from Abram Zuil Secondary came in third. Meanwhile, Janeka Walcott from Johanna Cecilia Secondary rode to victory in the Female category while Marva Merroy from Cotton Field Secondary came in second and Deon Farrell of 8th of May Secondary brought third. During the relay race, 8th of May Secondary copped first place with Charity Secondary running in second and Johanna Cecilia claiming the third spot.Coordinators of the event were Amitabh Bisnauth and Gary Williams from the Anna Regina Secondary School. Trophies donated by the Regional Administration were presented to the winners in the presence of Regional Officials including the Principal Personnel Officer (PPO) Bibi Rameeza Mullah; Youth and Culture Officer, Herald Alves, teachers and former national cyclist, Jason Boyce.The events were the first to be held by the Department of Education and according to the organisers, it will now become an annual feature in the calendar of events for the Region.(Elroy Stephney)last_img
