As anticipated, MonteCedro now employs 100 full and part-time staff members, many of whom live in the local Altadena community.Katey Frere was the first person to move in on Dec. 17, 2015; 183 residents now call MonteCedro home and 78% of the apartments are occupied. These residents are active both within MonteCedro’s interior – in the fitness center and pool, the art studios, card rooms, library and movie theatre – and in the external Altadena/ Pasadena community. In a recent three-month period, MonteCedro residents contributed more than 1,500 volunteer hours to more than 50 local non-profit entities.Off Lake Bistro, MonteCedro’s primary dining venue. One of the distinguishing features of MonteCedro is its Creative Living philosophy which provides a whole-self approach to wellness in mind, body and spirit, as well as empowering residents to pursue their unique aspirations and remain their own leaders. The Creative Living Academy is a lifelong learning model driven by residents, and a great number of the presenters are residents themselves. The MonteCedro interior features a dynamic collection of original art curated by Jay Belloli, former director of gallery programs at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena. More than 250 works of art, including paintings, photography, sculpture and textiles, adorn the walls of MonteCedro’s common spaces and hallways.MonteCedro resident Mike Trueblood and his chaperone, Max.MonteCedro is committed to the “Aging in Place” model. Rather than move through the traditional levels of care (independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care), MonteCedro residents receive a wide variety of home-care and home-health services in their independent apartments and at the community’s wellness center. Partnerships with local physicians, podiatrists and other providers make extensive on-site services possible.The MonteCedro Courtyards offer a unique memory care program based on a household model, where residents have private space, but spend most of their time in specially designed common areas. Alongside highly-trained and compassionate care-giving staff, residents dine, learn and create with other residents, avoiding the isolation common in more traditional memory care settings. As part of the Episcopal Communities & Services family of organizations, MonteCedro employees go through an extensive pre-employment process that includes background checks. In addition to healthcare and retirement benefits for full-time workers, all staff receive a thorough orientation and all are eligible to participate in an employee education program and a staff assistance fund for emergencies. During its first year of operation, MonteCedro residents made charitable gifts to establish three different endowed scholarships for the Employee Education Fund. For more information about the senior living community, please visit www.montecedro.org, or call (877) 357-8521.
