Probe launched after Guyana prisoners party on Mother’s Day
The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) has joined the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in launching an investigation into how inmates at a prison were able to acquire large bottles of liquor and engage in a party on Mothers’ Day last Sunday.Social media showed the inmates, including one who is on remand on a murder charge, at the New Amsterdam Prison posing with the drinks and smoking what appeared to be marijuana cigarettes.“There is no direct evidence pointing to any prison officer who would have facilitated the movement of the contraband into the prison. The prisoner would have identified a civilian who brought it,” GPS Director, Gladwin Samuels, told the online publication Demerarawaves. He said a playback of video surveillance recordings showed that a tractor was searched and nothing was found.“Sanctions will be taken against those persons who are found culpable,” Samuels said. The latest incident comes less than two weeks ago after Samuels had complained about the ongoing problem of smuggling of prohibited items into the prisons. He warned prison wardens about being part of the smuggling efforts and reminded them of the action that could be taken once they are found in the act.Last July, prisoners of the Camp Street jail gutted that facility during an escape by several prisoners. A young prison officer was shot dead by the escaping prisoners.
University of the West Indies campus to open in Antigua
University of the West Indies Cave Hill campus in Barbados. ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The University of the west Indies (UWI) will formally inform the Antigua and Barbuda government later this week that the island has been chosen as the location for the regional tertiary institution’s fourth landed campus, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced.Browne, speaking on his privately owned radio station, said that he expects to receive the official communication by Tuesday as it moves to have the Five Islands Campus should be opened in September with at least 1,000 students.Browne told radio listeners that he had been in discussions with the UWI Vice Chancellor, Sir Hilary Beckles on the issue. Last Friday.“Sir Hilary called myself and the Honourable Attorney General (Steadroy Benjamin) and he informed us that the members of the University Council have now unanimously approved the fourth landed campus for Antigua and Barbuda,” Browne said, adding that following the announcement by UWI, an implementation committee will be established by the university.“My understanding now is that on Monday, the Chancellor, after he would have informed the various Council members, he would then issue a formal statement to that effect and he will then mandate the university to establish an implementation committee,” Browne added.Browne said the three campus countries –Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados – which had concerns about the fourth landed campus have now been satisfied.“You know there are three countries who had reservations, those reservations have been lifted,” he said. The government has in the past said it would fund the university by a windfall tax on financial institutions and by diverting some funding to the prime minister’s scholarship program.
Patriots Push Tallawahs Closer to the Brink with Handsome Win
KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – St Kitts and Nevis Patriots took a giant leap towards qualification for the playoffs with a convincing 20-run victory that ensured beleaguered Jamaica Tallawahs continued their free fall in the Caribbean Premier League on Wednesday night.Asked to bat first at Warner Park, Patriots rallied to 176 for six off their 20 overs, with West Indies all-rounder Fabian Allen blasting an unbeaten 62 off just 27 deliveries.Mohammed Hafeez chipped in with 37 off 25 balls while Keron Cottoy helped close out the innings strongly with 27 not out off 23 balls. In reply, Glenn Phillips carried Tallawahs as far he could with a superb 87 off 49 deliveries but lacked the support and the innings eventually faltered to 156 all out in the final over.Significantly, talisman Chris Gayle managed just one and explosive all-rounder, Andre Russell, a first-ball ‘duck’, doing serious damage to the run chase as Tallawahs surrendered their last six wickets for a mere 41 runs. The defeat was the sixth in seventh outings for Tallawahs who will now depend on results in other matches going forward in order to have any chance of reaching the final four.In contrast, the victory for Patriots was their fourth in eight matches, further strengthening their hold on third place with eight points.Patriots wobbled at the start when they lost openers Devon Thomas (3) and Evin Lewis (7) but Hafeez and Englishman Laurie Evans (21) posted 46 for the third wicket to stage a recovery. When Evans was run out in the ninth after looking set, Patriots stumbled losing four wickets for 17 runs in quick time to find themselves teetering on the brink at 82 for six in the 13th over.Allen then came to his side’s rescue, belting seven fours and three sixes, inspiring an unbroken 94-run, fifth-wicket partnership with Cottoy whose knock contained two fours and a six.Together they gathered 81 runs from the last five overs to tilt the balance in Patriots’ favour, especially after the innings was stalling at 75 for three at the half-way stage.Tallawahs started their run chase slowly before suffering a massive setback when Gayle holed out to deep mid-wicket off left-arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell (2-33) in the third over with the score on three.Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph (2-37) then prised out Chadwick Walton (1) and Dwayne Smith (4) cheaply to leave Tallawahs on 46 for three in the seventh over and facing a climbing required run rate of nine runs per over.Tallawahs held out hope while Phillips remained at the wicket, the New Zealander plundering eight fours and five sixes, and adding 69 for the fourth wicket with Imran Khan (20).He was marching towards three figures when he perished in the 16th over, skying Cottoy to long-on, his dismissal coming the over after Russell also holed out in the deep.

PM casts doubt over imminent resumption for professional sport
Spotlight ups matchday commentary reach and capacity for new EPL Season August 21, 2020 StumbleUpon Share Share Submit An imminent return of professional sport remains unclear as Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled his staged plan to ease the coronavirus lockdown restrictions.Addressing the four nations of the UK last night, Johnson revealed a three-part strategy to kickstart the economy and reopen society. However, no mention to professional sports was made, casting uncertainty over when the sporting calendar will return.Johnson revealed that the government has eased certain social restrictions, including the limit on outdoor exercise. From Wednesday, it is possible for people to play sports with ‘members of their own household’, with some tennis courts and golf clubs set to reopen this week – on the discretion of governing bodies.Further details of the strategy are due to be discussed in Parliament later today. The government is expected to announce that some elite athletes can begin the initial phase of restricted group training later this week.It comes as speculation over a restart date for the Premier League and UK racing begins to grow.Premier League clubs are due to meet today to discuss plans on ‘Project Restart’’, in the hope of securing a June resumption date to conclude league proceedings. The EPL has submitted new proposals to the government on the viability of group training, and further protocols relating to both player and staff testing, underlining that matches will be held under peak sanitary conditions. The discussion will hear from both player representatives and managers before football officials meet with Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden on Thursday. PM Johnson is reported to have backed the EPL plans, as a further measure to lift the nation’s spirit during pandemic times. The Resumption of Racing Group is also due to meet later today to look at the steps which can be taken for the sport to return. The sport has been suspended since 17 March, however there has been suggestions that the sport could resume later this week. However, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has remained cautious about naming a resumption date.Speaking to Sky Sports Racing last week, BHA COO Richard Wayman explained: ““I don’t think it would have been the right thing for us to come out and name a date, it would have been an arbitrary date. Our aim is to ensure when we’re given the green light we’re ready to go.“One of the worst things that could happen for racing or any sport is for it to resume then after a few weeks have to stop because we haven’t got it right. We’re really dependent on the work of Dr Jerry Hill the chief medical adviser of the BHA who’s working with other sports to ensure when it does resume it does so in a safe way.“We need to make sure we’ve gone through every possible step to make sure that the return is a safe one.” Related Articles Successful summer leaves Leadstar positive over industry’s recovery August 18, 2020 Premier League looks to broadcast every behind-closed-door fixture August 28, 2020

However the club has suffered the effects of the global health pandemic with its value dropping by 14 per cent compared to last year. Since last season, Real Madrid have seen a decline in their estimated brand value, as bitter rivals FC Barcelona are now only €6m behind the club due to a ‘strong and diverse revenue generation’ by the Catalan side.Meanwhile in England, Manchester United’s value alone has declined by an estimated £143m according to Brand Finances figures. Due to the Premier League club’s loss in value, Man United has also dropped down the table to third after being overtaken by Barcelona.Overall, English clubs have dominated the list with six clubs included in the top ten. Moreover, 19 teams are in the firm’s top 50 list with Leicester City showing the greatest improvement by recording over 40 per cent growth compared to last year.
