GVC hails transformational year as revenue reaches £3bn GVC Holdings chief executive Kenneth Alexander has credited excellent operational execution, effective marketing and a good World Cup for helping drive growth in the operator’s 2018 results.Underlying net gaming revenue for the year – including Ladbrokes Coral results from March 28, 2018 – soared from £815.9m (€949.7m/$1.08bn) in 2017 to £3.0bn. On a proforma basis, incorporating Ladbrokes Coral’s performance from January 1, 2018, NGR was up 9% year-on-year to £3.6bn.When VAT and Goods and Services Tax of £44.3m were stripped out, annual revenue stood at £2.9bn on a reported basis, or £3.5bn on a proforma basis.“The Group’s full year results reflect a very strong performance with proforma net gaming revenue 9% ahead of last year and proforma underlying EBITDA 13% ahead,” GVC chief executive Kenneth Alexander said. “2018 was a transformational year for the Group with the completion of the Ladbrokes Coral acquisition in March making the Group the largest online-led sports-betting and gaming operator in the world.“Excellent operational execution, effective marketing and a good World Cup helped both the legacy GVC and the acquired Ladbrokes Coral businesses perform ahead of expectations and materially ahead of the market, delivering market share gains in all our major territories.”The reported results included a £1.7bn contribution from GVC’s online business, up 115% year-on-year, which GVC credited to the strong underlying performance of the legacy business, and a positive contribution from nine months of Ladbrokes Coral. This included £829.3m of sports revenue, and a further £710.4m from gaming via the sports brands. On a proforma basis, online revenue was up 19% at £1.9bn, driven by a £1.5bn contribution from the operator’s sports brands, with £10.2bn wagered on sports over the year. GVC’s legacy sports brands saw revenue grow 27% year-on-year, boosted by growth across territories such as Germany, Italy and Brazil. These brands benefitted from the roll-out of new games, high levels of cross-sell into non-sports products and a successful World Cup.Georgian operator Crystalbet, acquired in March 2018, saw net gaming revenue grow 61%, contributing 6.6 percentage points of legacy sports growth. Ladbrokes Coral’s sports brands also performed well, with revenue up 15%. Coral’s UK-facing site saw revenue increase 16% from FY2017, while Ladbrokes benefitted from a more refined approach to marketing, with revenue up 12%.In Australia, the Ladbrokes.com.au grew 17%, with sports wagers up 20%, though this was offset in part by a higher-than-usual margin of 10.7%. The Australian business will be further boosted by the acquisition of the Neds online sports betting business in November, allowing the operator to run a dual-brand strategy and giving it access to strong technology and personnel. The Italy-facing Eurobet brand, acquired through the Ladbrokes Coral deal, saw revenue grow 20%, with amounts wagered up 11%. Ahead of a range of marketing restrictions being introduced in the second half of 2019, GVC plans to leverage the brand’s retail network to ensure its online arm continues to grow.Overall sports brands gaming NGR was 25% ahead, with growth driven by new slots content, improved cross-sell, an expanded live casino offering and improved user-journeys.GVC’s online gaming brands saw revenue grow 16% on a proforma basis to £351.4m, driven largely by a stellar performance from partypoker, which saw revenue grow 40% year-on-year. Partypoker was boosted by investment in live events, pooled liquidity between France and Spain, and ongoing enhancements to user experience. This was supplemented by an 11% increase in the revenue contribution from the Gala brands, which benefited from a sponsorship deal with UK TV quiz show The Chase, and a 14% increase in revenue from GVC’s casino brands. The GVC brands saw growth aided by the introduction of new content and efforts to offer customers a more personalised user experience. The Foxy bingo brand was migrated to GVC’s proprietary bingo platform in November 2018, ending its long-term partnership with 888’s Dragonfish, and the operator said that post-migration performance had been positive.Looking at GVC’s retail division, acquired through the Ladbrokes Coral deal, reported revenue for the nine months post-acquisition came in at £2.4bn. On a proforma basis, covering the full calendar year, revenue was down 8% at £3.1bn.Sports betting revenue was down 9% at £547.3m. GVC noted that the positive impact of the World Cup and a full year of horse racing was offset by a stronger comparative period in 2017, when the operator’s over-the-counter performance was boosted by price guarantee offers.Machine revenue for the year fell 1% to £780.7m, which the operator said suggested that customer demand was impacted by negative coverage of B2 machines. The roll-out of new Equinox cabinets had a positive effect on Q4 revenue, in which machines posted a 3% increase. GVC noted that this growth had been driven by B3, rather than B2 content. The European retail divison, meanwhile, posted reported revenue of £211.7m, or £278.8m on a proforma basis, up 16% year-on-year. The proforma figure comprised largely of sports betting, up 15% at £210.2m, with a further £66.0m (up 18%) from other over-the-counter revenue. Gaming machines made a £2.6m contribution to European retail revenue.GVC generated a further £43.8m in reported revenue, and £53.1m in proforma revenue from other sources, such as its financial trading business, since-divested payments division Kalixa and telephone betting service telebet. The M&A-related expansion of GVC’s business led to a significant increase in cost of sales for the year. Looking at results on a reported basis, cost of sales for the period increased from £214.6m in 2017 to £931.0m, leaving a gross profit of £2.0bn for 2018. Administrative costs rose to £1.9bn, and after a £8.4m contribution from joint ventures and associates was factored in, resulted in GVC’s operating profit for the year growing to £67.3m, compared to a theoretical £4.5m loss for the combined businesses in 2017.Finance-related expenses rose to £63.9m and currency exchange losses amounted to £81.7m. These were offset in part by gains of £58.3m, arising from the change in the value of financial instruments, and £1.1m of finance-related income. This resulted in a pre-tax loss of £18.9m, and a net loss for the year  of £56.4m once income taxes of £37.5m were paid.GVC also revealed that trading in the first quarter of 2019 had been strong, with group net gaming revenue 11% ahead of Q1 2018, online revenue 22% ahead, European retail up 9% year-on-year and UK like-for-like retail revenue 2% down.“This represents an excellent start to the year, and at this early stage, the board is confident of delivering EBITDA and operating profit in-line with expectations,” GVC said. Prioritising R&D in a challenging market

first_img9th July 2019 | By Josephine Watson Tech & innovation Tags: Online Gambling Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Jadranko is CTO at NSoft, has a long-term involvement and expertise in the IT industry, insurance and private entrepreneurship that made him excel as a developer, strategist and solutions architect. He is responsible for the development of the technical aspects of the company’s strategy and its alignment with business goals.  By ensuring further development of our established products and coordinating the futuristic AI solutions, he successfully fosters the development department towards the long-term technical goals of the company. All eyes are on the gambling industry, from regulators to consumers to the media, and now more than ever businesses must prioritise efficiency, compliance and growth. However, many legacy solutions were built with the challenges of the past in mind, and even more recent developments leave companies wanting in terms of flexibility and ease of use.iGaming Business spoke to Jadranko Dragoje, CTO at NSoft to discuss how the company’s research and development strategy is approaching innovation.Dragoje says the company has always significantly invested resources to R&D, with a view that doing so sustains the company’s energy and relevance to the market. He explains: “Apart from obvious reasons, the goal of our innovations is also to create a more efficient work environment as repetitive work is probably one of the biggest morale killers.“In a highly competitive market, you have to differentiate yourself from the competition and I believe we have done so in the past and even more in the last few years. NSoft is expected to offer something astonishing every year and we accept that challenge continuously.” R&D strategy that worksDragoje says the key areas for research and development at NSoft largely focus around upgrading its betting platform solution by integrating additional software to boost the feature set the company offers both for retail and online. The first of those is NSoft Vision, software which offers standard features to the industry, such as continuous recording and playback. Additionally, they have added advanced features such as motion detection recording, age and gender prediction, face recognition.Dragoje says: “The true power of NSoft Vision comes from its smart, robust underlying AI services and other video processing methods that analyse video streams with the purpose of detecting motion, heads, people, their age, gender, count etc. Such features are explicitly intended to save time and energy for surveillance operators, help businesses in everyday activities, as well as to improve the search of recorded data in general. These features are constantly getting better thanks to machine learning.”Developments such as these features are essential for implementing and validating “Know Your Customer” requirements like age limit for betting, combating are reducing fraud by introducing alerting system inside retail shops, etc.The company’s first goal with this after initial release, Dragoje says, is to integrate it into NSoft’s retail solution.Another example is the development of NSoft’s Chameleon platform, which aims to remove the repetitive development work and offer betting enterprise clients the opportunity to create and configure advanced applications themselves.Dragoje explains: “Think of it as an application factory where the assembly line is always running producing high quality customised products with little effort.” Meeting the challengesAs well as the challenges facing the wider igaming industry, any company striving to invest significantly into innovating its services has a further set of challenges to meet.Dragoje says for NSoft, this was balancing satisfying and prioritising the company’s clients and needs as well as the internal ideas and technical debt that comes with creating new products while expanding into new markets. He continues: “Apart from that, quality development resources are scarce, so further optimisations and an increase in efficiency are needed. Our goal is to remove repetitive development time by componentising every part of our platform so it can be used as building blocks by business people to create applications to suit their needs.”This, he says, will dramatically reduce time to market, as customising NSoft’s products will “be a breeze”, allowing developers to solve new, complex problems instead of repeating what they have done before. Facing the futureUltimately, Dragoje says, the key motivator for most, if not all innovation is preparing for the future, especially the challenge of new markets and regulations.“As we continuously grow in business, our technology has to grow even faster. For this reason, besides scaling challenges, quickly releasing a product that complies with the new regulation is a priority.Unfortunately, with regulators each having unique requirements and needs, Dragoje says this isn’t always easy and it slows down the betting process.“This is where solutions such as Vision come to the rescue. For example, some regulators require for the operator to enter punter details when the payout is above a certain limit. This requires additional work from the operator and it slows down the entire flow. Using our recognition system this could be automated so that data is already entered when punter comes to the desk.” AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwittercenter_img With so much to consider and such high demand from consumers, innovation is key to survival, says NSoft Prioritising R&D in a challenging market Topics: Tech & innovation Email Addresslast_img read more

German states agree transition period for igaming

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Casino & games 11th September 2020 | By contenteditor Tags: Mobile Online Gambling German lawmakers are to permit online casino games in Germany, provided operators comply with the terms of the regulatory framework due to come into force from 1 July 2021.Per the agreement made by the country’s 16 Minister-Presidents, operators will be permitted to continue offering online slots, poker and sports betting provided they work to ensure they comply with the terms of the Glücksspielneuregulierungstaatsvertrag (GlüneuRStV) by 15 October.By this date they will be required to comply with the player protection guidelines and addiction prevention measures set out in the GlüNeuRStV. At this point operators will also be expected to adhere to the terms of the 2021 legislation for each vertical. This means that for sports betting, operators will be required to limit in-play betting markets to next goalscorer and final results, while for online slots a €1 per spin stake limit must be in place.Online table games, such as blackjack and roulette, will not be permitted in the transition period. These products must already be offered separately from online slots, and states may choose to grant their lotteries a monopoly for the vertical. While a blanket €1,000 monthly spending limit will be applied for all players, users may also apply to have this raised up €10,000. This will only be permitted provided a maximum bet amount is set for the player, and a special loss limit, which will prevent them from losing more than 20% of their maximum spend, must be imposed. Each operator will also be allowed to grant a small number of players a spending cap of between €10,000 and €30,000. This may only be applied to a maximum of 1% of an operator’s total registered players, and the individual must be at least 21 years of age. Enhanced due diligence and monitoring must also be carried out.Any breach of these terms will see the temporary authorisation withdrawn, and would most likely see the operator blocked from securing a licence from July next year.During the transition period, enforcement action against illegal operators will also be stepped up. These efforts will target sportsbook operators that did not apply for a licence under the third amendmended State Treaty and those that fail to implement the controls for online slots and poker; and those that continue to offer table games. For these offenders, Niedersachsen will continue to coordinate efforts to block payments. These conditions, however, will not apply in Schleswig-Holstein, which has adopted a more liberal framework in which all products are permitted and subject to a  20% gross revenue tax. That model will still be replaced by the GlüNeuRStV from July next year. The transition period has been under discussion for a number of months. It emerged in July that Nordrhein-Westfalen, Berlin, Hamburg and Bavaria were playing leading roles in these talks, and while a conclusion was ultimately agreed upon, a number of states expressed serious misgivings.Last month GVC Holdings, which has a strong presence in Germany through its bwin brand, began circulating a proposed transitional framework under which operators would implement the GlüNeuRStV in phases. This, it said at the time, would ensure key elements of the incoming treaty would be in place in a matter of months. Customer identification controls, for example, would be in place within 10 weeks, GVC said, while deposit limits could be enforced in three and a half months. The transition period aims to end a period of uncertainty for the gambling industry, after efforts to finally implement the third amended State Treaty on Gambling for 18 months ahead of the GlüNeuRStV coming into force failed. The third State Treaty was derailed by a legal challenge from Austrian bookmaker Vierklee, which successfully argued that the licensing process was not fully transparent and weighted in favour of market incumbents in the Hesse courts. While the Regional Council of Darmstadt, the body responsible for processing licence applications, declared its intention to appeal the ruling, it then agreed to pause enforcement action against an operator to negotiate a transitional arrangement.Under the GlüNeuRStV, the Regional Council will be replaced as the regulatory authority by a new entity, to be based in the state of Sachsen-Anhalt. For that treaty to come into force, however, it must still be ratified by 13 of Germany’s 16 states.A new tracker by sports betting operator body the Deutscher Sportwettenverband shows that it has been notified to 10 state parliaments to date, but is yet to progress to bill stage in any of these. It also awaits an assessment from the European Commission. Germany notified the legislation to the EC in May this year, and it was originally subject to a standstill period running until 19 August. However this was extended to 18 September, after Malta submitted a detailed opinion on the legislation. German lawmakers are to permit online casino games in Germany, provided operators comply with the terms of the regulatory framework due to come into force from 1 July 2021.
