Sports tourism key to JLP manifesto
Sports tourism, the building of new facilities and renovation of existing ones will be high on the agenda of the new administration. With the strong belief that Jamaica is perfectly placed, especially with its proximity to the North American market, increased efforts are expected to be made to woo athletes to the island, especially during the winter months. In its election manifesto, the Jamaica Labour Party promised to “intensity efforts to establish an extensive sports tourism programme that will, among other things, provide discounted prices to athletes that wish to use our facilities (especially during their winter season)”. To meet current and future demand the new government said, in its manifesto, that local sports training facilities “should be equipped to meet international standards and include gymnasium, swimming pool, indoor halls, cycling velodrome, squash courts, hockey fields (grass and synthetic, athletic tracks – cinder and synthetic) and outdoor courts such as in tennis.” With the National Stadium cycle track not meeting international standards, the country could be presented with plans to build a cycling velodrome to facilitate not only local riders, but top cyclists from the United States and Canada. “Jamaica has more than 1,600 sporting facilities … These facilities need to be rehabilitated. Other facilities should be built,” the manifesto said. There are also plans to increase the numbers and to improve the efficiency of local sports professionals to make them more marketable worldwide. “We will enhance greater partnership between the government and our local sporting bodies to enhance training and certification of our local coaches … not only to meet local, but also international standards that would deem them qualified/certified to ply their trade across the globe,” the new government’s manifesto said. The upgrade of sports professionals will not be limited to coaches – the expanded training will also cover sports physicians, physiotherapists, sports medicine physicians, sports nutritionists and sports administrators. The new government is also planning to promote more research in sports sciences. “The days of relying solely on raw-born talent is a thing of the past,” its manifesto said. With the many advances in approaches, the manifesto said, strategies will be developed to improve the overall health of the country’s citizens and this will be done in consultation with the ministry of health.

Education Officials set to tour fire ravaged HJ Robinson High
Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 01 Feb 2016 – School will not resume for the HJ Robinson High until Wednesday and today Education officials are due to go in for a damage assessment following an early morning fire at the institution which devoured the top floor of the Admin block. Education Minister and Deputy Premier, Hon Akierra Missick refrained from commenting on the alleged arson but during that Friday Post Cabinet Press Conference she did ‘condemn’ the action which led to the fire. Media was told $7 million has been spent on educational development in Grand Turk alone and that there are no worries for the Eliza Simons Primary, also in GT, it will get its new classroom block. Kudos went out to the men and women and the fire crew who all worked together to save items from the high school and extinguish the blaze. The police have jurisdiction over the scene, though they told Magnetic Media Friday that they had not yet classified the fire and said no one is being held for the tragic happening. Spring Creek Inmates Help Restore Woodlawn Cemetery
Marie Gage, well known locally for her extensive charitable work, and perhaps less well known as a retired corrections officer and sergeant at Spring Creek Correctional Center. Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享Inmates with Spring Creek Correctional Complex have been working to restore Seward’s historic Woodlawn Cemetery. Gage and Lapinskas worked with the men in Voc-ed (the vocational part of the prison’s education department), and decided that they would try their hand as casting headstones out of cement. The Woodlawn Cemetery is located 8/10s of a mile down Salmon Creek Road on a small corner of an outlying neighborhood, it sits nestled among spruce, fern and moss. The simple, wooden crosses scattered around the cemetery are surrounded by white, picket fences. The paint is peeling and the wood is rotting as nature tries to reclaim it all, according to the Department of Corrections. Gage: “Since 1999, prisoners from Spring Creek have worked on the restoration of the Woodlawn cemetery. That year, they replaced the wooden crosses, which are again succumbing to time and to the elements. This year, with the help of Superintendent Bill Lapinskas, the prisoners are making permanent grave markers.” Lapinskas: “After a few less than favorable results—and a lot of YouTube videos—we are creating some pretty nice pieces that should last a very long time. My hope is to create two or more replacements a month, as time and as resources allow.” Donations are coming in from individuals and, just recently, Seward Resurrection Bay Lions donated 18 bags of Quickcrete.
