The evaluation into the company’s carbon neutral status was conducted by myclimate, a Swiss non-profit organization.According to CloudSigma CEO Patrick Baillie, the company has adopted a strategy of “avoid, reduce and offset. By choosing an efficient data centre, using modern power efficient equipment and drawing electricity from one of greenest grids in the world, we’ve gone a long way to reducing our impact. Offsetting the remaining carbon footprint forms an integral part of our commitment to greener computing.”CloudSigma’s ability to provide carbon neutral computing comes from several factors. Its data center, located in Switzerland, has one of the highest power efficiencies in Europe for a multi-tenant facility. And Switzerland as a whole has one of the greenest electricity grids in the world. By consuming electricity efficiently from largely low-impact sources, the company avoids generating a significant amount of carbon dioxide.CloudSigma works with the non-profit myclimate to assess the company’s total greenhouse emissions, not just in the hardware and electricity required to run the servers, but in employee travel and office space and equipment. myclimate also develops and supports carbon offset projects around the world that reduce greenhouse gases, such as energy efficient cookers in Peru.As a Greenpeace report in March pointed out, the rise in big data and cloud computing could lead to a huge increase in CO2 emissions if steps aren’t taken by the industry to reduce energy consumption and offset the emissions. According to CloudSigma’s Baillie, “We are taking the lead amongst cloud computing providers in voluntarily adopting efficiency policies and fully offsetting any remaining environmental impact.” A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…
Everything You Need to Know About Layer Styles in After Effects
Gradient OverlayThe Gradient Overlay style enables you to use multiple colors to create a smooth transition from one color to another across your title. The Drop Shadow applies a nice shadow behind your title.Inner ShadowSimilar to the Drop Shadow style, the Inner Shadow produces a thin shadow within your title. Using the Inner Shadow creates depth and contrast in your title elements.Inner Glow & Outer GlowThe main difference between the shadow and the glow Layer Styles is the blending mode option. The Inner Glow and Outer Glow styles allow you to create a glow around your title using using blend modes.SatinLastly, the Satin effect darkens the interior portion of titles and objects and helps create undefined contrast.Overall, Layer Styles allow After Effects users to create detailed titles and objects that stand apart from regular design. West Bengal’s new CM Mamata Banerjee has inherited a state of woes
Mamata Banerjee created history by rooting out the Left Front and becoming the first woman chief minister of West Bengal. Now that she is the CM, the time for rhetoric as a firebrand opposition leader is over. She has a long list of challenges and will have to deliver as a professional executive head of the Maa-Maati-Maanush (Mother-Land-People) government. It is well understood that the level of expectation of the people is extremely high, and Mamata will now have to keep all the populist promises. The overwhelming support of the people to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the historic assembly election has made the task tougher for the new government. The biggest challenge which the CM will have to handle now is to bring West Bengal out of the acute financial crisis. The Left Front government has left the state exchequer with a revenue deficit of nearly Rs 2 lakh crore. Caught in the financial crisis, Mamata is now definitely worried about guaranteeing salaries and pensions for state government employees. Within hours of taking over as the CM, she held a long meeting with state finance minister Amit Mitra.Mitra has already suggested that the new government should approach New Delhi with a request for moratorium for at least three years on the interest payment on the revenue deficit. With the blessings of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, the chief minister is hopeful of finding a way to resolve the financial crisis. The second challenge for Mamata is re-establishing West Bengal as an abode of peace.advertisementWhile the Maoists are spreading their tentacles across the state, she will have to ensure that the insurgents don’t get to create any major security threat in future. The toughest challenge for her would be restraining her own party members from seeking revenge on the Left cadres. Since the election results, eight persons were killed in clashes between the CPI(M) cadres and TMC members.Fearing more clashes, Mamata has made a clarion call to her party members to refrain from all forms of badla (revenge). The new CM will also have to fulfill her promise of solving the problems in Darjeeling hills within three months. While the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha is committed to a separate state of Gorkhaland, New Delhi is not keen on further re-organisation of states. So, there is a strong possibility of trouble brewing in the Darjeeling hills in the near future. To woo support in Jangalmahal, the Maoist heartland in Bankura, Purulia and West Midnapore districts, Mamata had promised to withdraw Operation Green Hunt and grant amnesty to all political prisoners (including arrested Maoist cadres). It remains to be seen whether she will be able to prevail over New Delhi on this matter.During the election campaign, Mamata had promised to create one million government jobs within one year. With the state government reeling under a financial crisis, how can she generate additional funds to create employment avenues for the unemployed youth of the state? The new CM will face a tough challenge in overhauling the bureaucracy and the state police force.During the 34 years of Left rule, the bureaucracy and the state police were highly politicised, and everyone feared that Mamata would bring about a massive reshuffling in the government set- up. But, the CM has already made it clear that the bureaucracy and the police would be allowed to function without interference. She will also have to tame the state employees, a large section of which still owe allegiance to the Co-ordination Committee, a CPI(M)-affiliated body. With so many challenges, people are now worried whether Didi would be able perform.===The finest greeting for Mamata Banerjee came from the top of Mt. Everest. Two mountaineers from Jaypurbeel in Howrah district on Saturday reached the top of Mt. Everest. Both dedicated their success to the political change in the state.Rajib Bhattacharya, a 39-year-old trader from Howrah, was the first to reach the summit of the world’s tallest peak at around 10 am on Saturday.Around 11.45 am, another mountaineer from Howrah, Dipankar Ghosh, also reached the summit of the world’s tallest peak. Both Bhattacharjee and Ghosh were part of an international team of mountaineers, and had mobilised funds on their own as the Left Front government did not extend any financial assistance to the mountaineers to scale Mt. Everest.Madan Mitra, the new sports minister of West Bengal on Saturday congratulated both Bhattacharjee and Ghosh for successfully scaling the world’s tallest peak. “This is the biggest gift to the CM,” he said. He further said that the CM would also felicitate the two mountaineers for making West Bengal proud.advertisement===Celebrations in SingurMamata Banerjee has not forgotten the promise she had made to the farmers of Singur three years ago.Within hours of taking over as chief minister on Friday, Didi took a cabinet decision to return 400 acres of land which was forcefully acquired by the Left Front government to the farmers. She owes a lot to the farmers of Singur, as the anti-land acquisition movement had made her party popular. Her announcement resulted in a euphoria in Singur. The farmers sang and danced till Friday late evening. She also announced that Tata Motors would be allowed to set up any industry at Singur in the remaining 600 acres. The Tatas are yet to make any statement on returning the 400 acres of land to the farmers of Singur. ===Goodies for the North With challenges mounting, West Bengal’s new CM Mamata Banerjee would soon have a modern secretariat – Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) – on lines of the PMO. Claiming that development is the topmost priority, Mamata said that her CMO would plan and supervise various development works in the state.”My priority is to set up infrastructure for good governance and to speed up development work for the benefit of the people,” the new CM said. The Trinamool Congress is also committed to the setting up of a new miniature secretariat in North Bengal.Sources in the party said the secretariat for North Bengal would be set up at Siliguri, the second largest city in the state. The North Bengal secretariat will undertake planning and implementation of special development schemes in the six districts, which are comparatively backward because of the Left Front’s alleged lackadaisical attitude. So far, people in the North Bengal districts have been complaining that the state government never bothered to develop basic infrastructure in the area. Except tea, there is no major industry in North Bengal.
Cannabis Authority Approves 11 More Licences
The Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA) has approved an additional 11 applications for licences in the medical cannabis industry. He was making his contribution to the 2019/20 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (April 23). Story Highlights Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Audley Shaw, said that “the applicants are preparing to receive their licences”. The Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA) has approved an additional 11 applications for licences in the medical cannabis industry.Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Audley Shaw, said that “the applicants are preparing to receive their licences”.He was making his contribution to the 2019/20 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (April 23).Minister Shaw noted that the CLA has received 627 applications from over 200 applicants as at March 31, with 33 licences issued to date.He said that 178 applications are at the conditional approval stage, which means that the companies involved would have successfully passed the CLA’s due diligence process and are now undergoing preparatory work to move to the licensing stage.Mr. Shaw told the House that the CLA has taken steps to respond more efficiently to the growing demands within the industry. These include an increase in the staff complement and inclusion of an agricultural specialist.“The Authority is also contemplating amendments to the existing regulations, in keeping with the development of the local and global medical cannabis industry and will, in the near future, complete drafting instructions for regulations concerning import, export and transhipment, as we move to capitalise on the opening up of greater opportunities in the international space,” he said.
Partners to Build Drone for Remote Ballast Tank Inspection
zoom Dutch AkzoNobel’s Marine Coatings Business and the UK-based companies Barrier Group and DroneOps have teamed up to develop a drone capable of remotely inspecting ballast water tanks in an effort to improve “accuracy, efficiencies, as well as the health and safety of ships’ crews and inspection personnel.”The project, entitled RECOMMS (Remote Evaluation of Coatings and Corrosion on Offshore Marine Structures and Ships), will use virtual reality technology and semi-autonomous operation of a drone to evaluate ballast water tanks and other difficult-to-access areas on vessels and offshore structures, including inspections of coatings and corrosion.Carried out by crew, surveyors or independent inspectors, such inspections are said to be a risky activity which represents one of the most common causes of work-related fatalities in the industry.“By replacing human inspections with a drone, routine maintenance can be monitored remotely in real time by office-based staff, with instant feedback available to the vessel or offshore structure’s superintendent,” RECOMMS said.“Surveys of enclosed spaces and ballast water tanks are an essential part of routine maintenance on board vessels and offshore structures, and are increasingly critical for ship owners. However, inspecting these areas thoroughly can require working at height, entering confined spaces, and negotiating slippery surfaces that could be poorly lit, all of which are high-risk activities that the maritime industry is keen to address,” Michael Hindmarsh, spokesperson for RECOMMS and Business Development Manager at AkzoNobel’s Marine Coatings Business, said.According to RECOMMS, the drone inspections have in the longer term the potential to ensure “a systematic and consistent approach” to enclosed space inspection by crew, producing data readily available for shore-based staff, flag states and class societies. The completion and launch of the drone are planned for October 2017.
Ohio State wrestler Kyle Snyder qualifies for 2016 Olympics in Rio de
OSU sophomore Kyle Snyder enters the arena during the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships on March 19 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Credit: Courtesy of OSUAfter winning a world championship, a Big Ten championship and a national championship in less than a year, Ohio State sophomore wrestler Kyle Snyder added another accomplishment to his résumé: an Olympic berth.Snyder was victorious in Iowa City, Iowa, on Sunday after taking down 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jake Varner in the best-of-three series of matches. As the reigning world champion, Snyder received an automatic spot in the finals.“It’s pretty hard to describe,” Snyder said in an OSU press release. “It started off making it to the NCAA finals as a true freshman then losing that. After that I kind of fell into a lot of success, not really fall into it but through a lot of hard work and self-belief. I really haven’t had a chance to look back on it yet, honestly.”Varner won in the first meeting, but Snyder rebounded after a short resting period. The OSU sophomore tied the score 4-4 in the initial bout but lost because of criteria.Snyder walked out from the locker room with a much more focused demeanor for the next meeting and showed complete control in the next two matches, outscoring Varner 10-1.“It was pretty nerve-wracking,” Snyder said in the release. “I had all intentions of winning the first match and winning two in a row. But that is why the sport of wrestling is great because you never know what is going to happen. You never know if you are going to win or lose, all you can do is just prepare.”It’s the fourth time Snyder has beaten Varner in his career. Last year, prior to his world championship, Snyder toppled Varner twice in the U.S. Team Trials and once at the U.S. Open. The freshly crowned heavyweight champion is set to represent the United States at 97 kilograms in Rio de Janeiro from Aug. 5 to 21. Snyder joins a handful of OSU alumni who have earned their way onto the U.S. Olympic team in the past. Mark Coleman finished seventh in 1992, while Perry Martter and Harry Steel competed in 1924.Snyder is the only Buckeye wrestler to make it to the Olympics while an active member of the Scarlet and Gray. All other OSU wrestlers shooting for a spot on the national team were eliminated from contention earlier in the day, including redshirt sophomore Nathan Tomasello and the Buckeyes’ most notable alumnus, four-time NCAA champion Logan Stieber. Tomasello lost in the quarterfinals, while Stieber lost in the semifinals.
Conley and Turner cash in with new salary cap
Day 1 of NBA free agency on Friday was an unprecedented start to what will become the most lucrative offseason in the history of the sport. The increase from $70M to $94M in team cap space has given owners the ability to offer substantial contracts to many players who would’ve never sniffed $20M per year under the previous salary cap.Two of those beneficiaries are former Ohio State Buckeyes Mike Conley and Evan Turner. Conley re-signed with the Memphis Grizzlies for a five-year, $153 million deal. Turner etched a four-year, $75 million deal with the Portland Trail Blazers.Conley’s deal marks the richest in NBA history, which could be surpassed by free agents LeBron James and Kevin Durant.Conley is now bringing in more money per year than any other point guard in the NBA despite never being named an All-Star. Since being drafted at No. 4 overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Grizzlies, Conley has widely been regarded as the league’s most underrated point guard. He has averaged 15.7 points per game and 5.9 assists per game over the last four seasons with the Grizzlies. His season was cut short after 56 games because of an Achilles injury.Conley played one season at OSU and averaged 11.3 ppg and 6.1 apg in 2006-07, leading the Buckeyes to their first NCAA final since 1962.Turner played with the Celtics the last two seasons averaging 10.5 ppg, 4.4 apg, 4.9 rebounds per game in 2015-16 as Boston’s sixth man.Portland will be Turner’s fourth team in the NBA since being selected No. 2 overall by Philadelphia in 2010.Turner was AP Player of the Year in 2009-10 with OSU averaging 20.4 ppg, 6.0 apg and 9.2 rpg.
