UWF Volleyball Improves to 6-0 with Win at Alaska-Fairbanks

first_img Sept. 1, 2007   Box Score      FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Argo Volleyball team remains unbeaten with a 3-0 win at Alaska-Fairbanks. The Nanooks, the host school of the Tournament, were in control of game (set) one until the Argos tied it at 30. Despite a strong crowd doing the Igloo Dance, Coach Melissa Wolter explained, “we never panicked, and we were very efficient with the ball on the key points.” After holding off two set points and finally winning set one at 32-30, the Argos put Alaska-Fairbanks away in three straight games, to drop the Nanooks to 5-2 on the young season.A straight-sets victory certainly did not look on the cards early on, as the Nanooks came out strong, taking the game to West Florida. The Argonauts withstood the early assault from a very good Alaska Fairbanks team, and clawed their way back to snatch the first set that would prove critical. West Florida hit an impressive .316 attack percentage, logging 18 kills with just six errors in that first set. From there, Alaska Fairbanks was never able to regain their momentum, dropping the second set 30-23. With their backs against the wall, the Nanooks put up a fight in the third game, but West Florida proved too tough, closing the match out with a 30-25 win.UWF is getting offense from many options, with several players stepping up each match. Coach Wolter stated that , “tonight Chelsea (Wilhoite) and Luciana (Rapach) played real well.” It seems like every match so far this season, two or three players step it up, while the others are steady. Thru the first six games, the Argos are displaying many weapons which may be the overall strength of the team.Setter Madeline Gonzalez turned in another outstanding performance, spreading the offense around to the tune of 54 team kills. Three West Florida players (Kimberly Clark, Rapach and Wilhoite) chipped in 11 kills apiece, while Gonzalez finished with 39 assists. Defensive, the Argos had four players (Jerica Carter, Rapach, Clark, and Wilhoite) with 10 digs for the match.Senior Jessica King led the Nanooks with 13 kills, along with a team-high three aces. Middle hitters Korlyn Bolster and Erica Gage showed some solid defense to slow the Argos a little, finishing with four block assists each for Alaska Fairbanks. The Argos now 6-0 on the season, are playing a late Saturday night match vs. Hawaii-Hilo (3-3), to conclude the three matches in Alaska. The Argos will be back in action at the UWF Fieldhouse on September 7th, hosting the Argonaut Regional Cross-over. UWF hosts Emporia State at 7:00 on Friday evening, as the Tournament then continues on Saturday and Sunday. Here is the Journal entry from the third day of the Argonaut’s trip to Alaska. Submitted by Jesse Keroack on August 31:Today was another beautiful and exciting day in Alaska! We woke up to a chilly but sunny morning and picnicked in one of the girls’ rooms. The bananas and yogurt were a huge hit and we devoured our breakfast while enjoying the animated movie Madagascar. Around noon we met downstairs and drove to the luncheon scheduled for us, and all the teams in the tournament. We arrived at a park-like place called “The Salmon Bake.” The lunch was another fabulous meal of fresh salmon, prime rib, salad, pasta, bread and desserts, which we unfortunately could only have one of under coaches’ orders. As the luncheon progressed, all the teams were introduced and the coaches gave short speeches. To our enjoyment and surprise of the coaches, they were taught and preformed a traditional Eskimo dance called the “igloo dance.” Coach Wolter preformed the whole dance with a huge grin of both embarrassment and splendor. Naturally we all pulled out our cameras and filmed the entire thing! After the meal and ceremony, we got to explore the spectacular grounds at the park. There were playgrounds, ponds, little shops and small museums all over, and every small log cabin like building was surrounded with vibrant flowers. We all enjoyed the comfortably cool weather and sights in the park, but we had to leave and head over to the gym for a short practice. After our practice we headed back to the hotel for a little snack and down time until we had to return for our first match of the tournament. We were all anxious to get to the gym and show everyone here what we could do. We had been looking forward to this trip according to coach for “at least 8 months”. Finally it was time to play! For our first match we played the Humboldt Lumberjacks from California. We swept them in a 3 game match. After watching some of the following match, which included both our opponents for tomorrow’s (Saturday) matches, we headed back to the hotel for a good nights rest. Bournemouth sign Serie A star

first_img1 Bournemouth have wasted no time making their first move in the transfer window with the loan capture of winger Juan Iturbe from Roma. The 22-year-old, an Argentina Under-20 international, joins Eddie Howe’s team for the rest of the season subject to endorsement from the Football Association and a European work permit.Bournemouth have the option of making the move permanent in the summer for an undisclosed fee.Iturbe, who has scored three goals in 39 league appearances for Roma, had been heavily linked with a move to the south coast and he revealed Bournemouth’s desire to sign him was the clinching factor. He told Cherries Player: “It’s a big opportunity for me to come and play in the Premier League. I’d like to thank everyone for making this move happen and I’m very pleased to be here.“There were a few clubs that were interested but things happened pretty quickly and once this process was under way it was a straightforward decision for me to make.“I didn’t know a lot about Bournemouth as a club but the more I read and the more I found out how much they wanted me, it’s an easy decision to go to a place where you feel really wanted. That became the overriding factor.”Iturbe was born in Argentina but grew up in Paraguay and began his career with Cerro Porteno before moving to Europe and joining Porto aged 18.Successful loan spells with River Plate and Verona prompted Roma to shell out more than £17million to bring him to the Italian capital on a five-year deal in the summer of 2014.Iturbe has made 19 appearances for Roma this season, scoring his only goal against Frosinone in September. He trained with his new team-mates on Friday but will not be eligible for Saturday’s trip to Leicester.
